Monty praise for Brian Soutar

Victorious Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie has lavished praise on Brian Soutar after his South African Amateur triumph, insisting the latest Scottish success in the prestigious competition further endorses the SGU's winter performance programmes.

Soutar achieved a stunning victory at Mowbray GC in Cape Town, the biggest win of his career, to quickly follow in the footsteps of Michael Stewart, the 2011 champion. The 27-year-old came through an international class field to defeat Brandon Stone, the 18-year-old rising star of South African golf, 2 & 1 in the final. In winning South Africa's oldest Amateur event, the Leven Golfing Society player has etched his name on a trophy previously won by the likes of Retief Goosen and Ernie Els and booked his place in the field for the South African Open on the European Tour in November.

Soutar, who graduated from Edinburgh University in 2006 and was a welding inspector before focusing on his golf from 2010, is part of the 7-man SGU National Men's Squad....Having also worked hard on his game for four weeks during a hugely beneficial four weeks at Yas Links GC in Abu Dhabi before Christmas, Soutar's endevours have paid off - and Montgomerie could not be happier for him...

Montgomerie, speaking at the 2012 launch of Monty's Monthly Medal at Gleneagles, said: "Brian's win is great for Scottish Golf and great for Scottish Amateur Golf. After the success of the Eisenhower Trophy in 2008, we are continuing what we have been doing. To follow in the the footsteps of Michael Stewart is great, beating some of the real top amateurs in the world. Of course, he joins Els and Goosen on the trophy which is also fantastic."

Montgomerie also believes Soutar still has time to make an impact in the professional ranks, should he choose to do so. The Fifer has talked of trying his luck at the european Tour's Qualifying School at the end of the domestic season.

Well done from all at the Club!!!

It is my pleasure, as Captain of the world’s 11th oldest Golf Club, to welcome you to Leven Golfing Society and to the famous Leven Links. The iconic Clubhouse which overlooks what is claimed to be the second most difficult finishing hole in Scottish golf with the demonic Scoonie Burn surrounding the Green, is a magnificent turreted building housing many historical artefacts including the famous Standard Life Gold Medal which is older than the Open Championship’s Claret Jug. The Standard Life Open Amateur Stroke-play Championship which is the world’s oldest such competition was inaugurated in 1870 and has been won by many famous golfers including perhaps the most famous of all,  LEE WESTWOOD OBE who earlier this year kindly agreed to accept the Patronage of the Club. The Club is extremely proud and delighted that Lee accepted this honour because it was the Club’s way of acknowledging his many great golfing achievements both as an Amateur and now as a Professional. Leven Links is one of the finest and truest of all Scottish Links Courses with its bents and fescues and typical undulating links fairways and is enjoyed by all who play it.

To all visitors playing over the Links, I extend a very warm welcome and invite you to come into our Clubhouse and receive a typical Scottish warm welcome and at the same time look at the many historical items on display. I wish all Members and Visitors a continued good golfing year.

W A (Gus) Black
