AWAY SCORE RETURNS & STABLEFORD ADJUSTMENTS
Stableford adjustment is a system applied by CONGU (The Handicapping Authority for British Golf) which limits excessive scores at any hole in a round of golf, for handicapping purposes.
It also supplies scores for holes at which a N/R - no return is recorded. It operates on the principle that the maximum score on any hole shall not be greater than a nett double bogey, i.e. in a Stableford competition the minimum score at which no points would be scored.
Examples:
- 1) Golfer handicap 0 ; Maximum score allowed on any hole = par + 2. If he records a score of 9 on a par 5, the Stableford adjustment would be calculated as par 5 + 2 = 7 therefore adjustment is -2. The total of any such adjustments is subtracted from the gross score to arrive at the Stableford adjusted score. If this golfer has a N/R on a par 5, computer will generate an entry of par +2 = 7 for handicap purposes.
- 2) Golfer handicap 8 ; Has an 8 on a par 4 with stroke index 3 ; Stableford adjustment is par + 2 + stroke = 7, therefore adjustment is -1. Same golfer has an 8 on a par 4 with stroke index 12 ; calculation is par +2 (no stroke) = 6 therefore adjustment is -2.
- 3) Golfer handicap 23 receives par + 2 + 1 on holes stroke index 6 to 18 and par + 2 + 2 on holes stroke index 1 to 5
Thus it is seen that maximum per hole is PAR + 2 + stroke/s if applicable.
Adjustment is difference between score and permissible maximum for hole.
